Hello. I'm Allison McNair. Welcome to NH Outlook. |
Intro Party UnityReturn to index of stories... |
A record number of voters cast Republican ballots in last week's primary election. For Republicans, that's the good news. The bad news is, several of those races were bruising contests in which the candidates traded plentiful charges and criticisms. The Democrats drew fewer voters but exchanged fewer insults. So which party is more ready for the election? Political editor Richard Ager takes a look at that question. 2:43 - 2:50 |

Soundup: Republican unity tape 1 01;01:00 ** roll of stickers "Would you like a sticker?" "I can wear one now." Track: At the Republican unity breakfast, the main course wasn't what was on the buffet. It was the message being served up by the speakers Soundup: Republican unity tape 1 01;07;14 Today we kick off our political efforts here in NH as a party, and as a united party. Track: There's that word. With the long bruising primary for the gubernatorial and senate nominations finally over, it's not surprising that unity took top billing at this gathering. Bite: Republican unity tape 2 02:25:30 It's a kickoff and I think you have both elements of the end of one, the beginning of another and it's a ritual, but I think it's one that people enjoy. Track: The ritual includes gracious losers Bite: Republican unity tape 2 02:01:41 Some people were kind enough to compliment my concession speech the other night, said it was classy, asked me how I could do that, and I guess the answer is: Practice makes perfect. Bite: Republican unity tape 2 02:07:52 Over the next 8 weeks, I will be out there working as hard as I have over the past year, for our nominee Craig Benson, for John Sununu, for Charlie Bass, for Jeb Bradley, and for the entire Republican ticket, and I ask you to join me. Thank you. Track: and gracious winners Bite: Republican unity tape 2 02;10:31 And it was tough out there, but Bruce and Gordon, you did a terrific job - I want to thank you for the very fact that I got to run against you in a very competititve contest. Track: There were soothing words, borrowed from Ernest Hemingway Bite: Republican unity tape 1 01:26:24 The true test of courage is grace under pressure and I believe that's absolutely true. Each of you who are here this morning who were involved in campaigns as supporters, as volunteers, as families, who may not have tasted success, have exhibited courage. You have been graceful under pressure. Track: But where was Bob Smith? Judd Gregg explained the senior senator was needed in Washington for a vote. Soundup: Republican unity tape 1 01:13:55 *** Obviously Bob Sununu - Bob Smith is going to be making that vote for us today. That's a really Freudian slip I'm not sure how I'm ever going to figure that one out. Track: And so they moved on - to the real subject of the moment - the Democrats. Bite: Republican unity tape 1 01;08:15 *** They nominated what I would call a ticket of taxers. A liberal lineup. Bite: Republican unity tape 1 01:21:43 *** With your help and support, we'll make the dream a reality, we'll send Jeanne Shaheen back to the private sector. Bite: Democratic Unity tape 1 01:22:30 We have 337 Democrats of great heart, and I hope of great shoe leather, ready to go win their races. Track: At their own unity breakfast, the Democrats served up a different version of recent history. Soundup: Democratic Unity tape 1 01;09;09 I am proud of what we have accomplished in the last 6 years. 7000 more children in public kindergarten. Thousands of new jobs created. 17,000 kids enrolled in children's health insurance. Bite: Democratic Unity tape 2 02;03;02 Poor Craig Benson. He spent $10 million and 62% of the Republicans voted against him. Track: But notable by her absence was Fernald's primary opponent. Bite: Democratic Unity tape 2 02;03:27 I want to join the governor in praising Bev Hollingworth. We owe her a huge debt for her 20 years to the people of NH. Track: Republican voters cast more than twice as many ballots than Democrats did - so Democrats are hoping for some division in Republican ranks. On primary night, when asked if they would vote for Sununu, long-time Smith supporters replied. Bite: Smith primary night tape 1 22:09:52 Absolutely. You have to have unity. Bite: Smith primary night tape 1 22:08:57 Reluctantly. Bite: Smith primary night tape 1 22:07;33 I'm a veteran. I like Bob Smith. It's going to be very, very difficult to honest with you. I think conservatives around the country in general by the Republican party have been dissed big time and it's getting really old. The old Nixon day - run to the right then run to the center. Well, if the democrats and republicans are running to the center, then they're going to slam into one another. So what's the point? It's going to be tough. Bite: Shaheen kickoff tape 03:21:30 I know many supporters of Bob Smith are very disappointed, and while we may disagree on some issues, I ask you - Smith supporters - to join my campaign. Track: And perhaps most of all, Democrats hope for more visibility. Bite: Shaheen kickoff tape 03:28:42 I think what's at issue here is making up for the fact that a Republican primary which has spent almost $12 million has basically shut the Democratic party out of the public view. We have to get our message out. Soundup: Democratic Unity tape 2 02;18:30 What time is it? GAMETIME! Track: For NH Outlook, I'm Richard Ager. Soundup: Republican unity tape 2 02:24:15 ** "thank you." old guy leaving with sign |

Lakes Region Voices Interviewed John Howe Managing Editor of the Citizen in Laconia Mark Thurston Republican owner of Thurston's Marina in Weirs Beach Chairman of County Commissioners Jane Wood former State Rep and democrat. People on the Street Chip Standup at Lake Winnepasaukee Lake Winn… 28 miles long 174 feet deep It is the jewel of the lakes region and a key component of a tourism economy that spans all seasons and all kinds of recreation from water skiing to snow skiing. This unique geography has shaped the economy here in the Lakes Region and the geography and the economy together have shaped the politics. To learn more about the political environment in the Lakes Region I visited John Howe general manager of the Citizen in Laconia. Lakes region is very conservative. Tourism is number one driving the rest of the economy. Small manufacturing firms and retail and service industry make up the rest. Mark Thurston made the point that most of the program dollars from the state go to the southern tier leaving the Lakes Region starved for state dollars to help infrastructure and education etc. Jane Wood had a strong concern that people are not motivated to particpate in the political system. Hard to get people to run for office. |
